And a few less frequently asked, but fascinating Q&A’s

What is osteopathy and how does it work?

Osteopathy is a form of manual healthcare that focuses on the musculoskeletal system, including the joints, muscles, and spine. Osteopathy works by improving the body’s natural healing abilities, reducing pain and improving mobility.

What conditions can osteopathy treat?

Osteopathy can treat a wide range of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, sports injuries and arthritis. Osteopathy can also be used to improve overall health and wellbeing. Anything to do with the musculoskeletal system (and related nervous system) might benefit from osteopathy. Osteopaths can be primary care providers or allied health providers depending on your needs.

osteopathy FAQsIs osteopathy safe?

Yes – osteopathy is a gentle, holistic, non-pharmaceutical mode of treatment. Osteopaths are trained to identify and manage any potential risks associated with treatment.

How long does an osteopathy session last?

Sessions usually last between 30 and 60 minutes. Initial consultations are usually longer than standard sessions since we want to understand you, your movement patterns and your medical history thoroughly, but in general – treatments fall within half hour or one hour blocks.

How many osteopathy sessions will I need?

This is the age-old question. And the answer doesn’t change – “it depends”. It depends on the severity of your injury/pain, how long it’s been established, your movement patterns… But you’ll probably start feeling better quickly which is the most important thing. Your osteopath will work with you to come up with a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Does osteopathy hurt?

Osteopathy treatments are generally gentle and non-invasive. Some patients may experience mild discomfort during treatment, but this usually subsides quickly. Some patients might find the exercises prescribed by their osteopath tiring, but this too gets better with time and practice. On the other hand, some patients describe their treatments as a release – as we help to release tension and increase blood flow.

And now some less frequently asked (but you all wanted to ask) questions…

  • Can Osteopathy make me a better athlete/dancer/more flexible/better in bed?

(Excuse us – *blush*)

Osteopathy may be able to help improve flexibility and athletic ability to some extent, especially if the underlying issue is related to musculoskeletal problems. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques, such as massage, stretching, and joint mobilisation, to improve joint and muscle mobility and alignment, which can help increase flexibility and range of motion. In addition, osteopaths can also help address any imbalances or restrictions in the body that may be affecting athletic performance. Ultimately, your health and wellbeing is our top priority!

For example, they may work on improving the alignment of the spine, pelvis, and other joints to reduce stress and strain on muscles and improve movement efficiency. BUT… we can’t restore what wasn’t there. So YES and NO. We can certainly help you on your journey to better (ahem) performance by helping you through the barriers, but we can only help you to be as good as you are so – practice, stretch, train and … um…
